Laser physics
Ali Javan, born in Tehran, came to the United States in 1948 and earned a PhD in physics from Columbia University in 1954. At Bell Labs he conceived the gas laser principle, which led to the helium-neon laser. The National Inventors Hall of Fame describes the gas laser as the first continuous-light laser and inducted him in 2006. He and William R. Bennett Jr. are named inventors on US Patent 3,149,290 for a gas optical maser, assigned to Bell Telephone Laboratories.1,2
