James Dyson, born in Cromer, Norfolk, built a cyclone particle collector in 1978 and spent the next five years testing more than 5,000 prototypes, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica. He sold his G-Force cleaner to a Japanese company, where it became a commercial success, and after he opened a plant in North Wiltshire in 1993 the Dual Cyclone became the top-selling vacuum cleaner in Britain. He is the named inventor on US Patent 4,593,429 for a vacuum cleaning appliance, granted in 1986.1,2
