Medical devices, vascular stents
Julio C. Palmaz is a vascular radiologist who earned his medical degree from the National University of La Plata in 1971 and developed the intravascular stent at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio between 1978 and 1985. The National Inventors Hall of Fame describes the Palmaz Stent as the first commercially successful stent and the first balloon-expandable one. It says the FDA approved it for peripheral arterial use in 1991 and for coronary use in 1994. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.1
